Odin's Eye
€ 350,00
In "Odin’s Eye", myth and mortality intersect in a haunting, visceral meditation on sacrifice, perception, and hidden truths. The central figure—evoking Odin, the Norse god of wisdom—stands half-ensnared by a noose, his gaze steady despite a violent offering: the removal of his own eye.
This is not simply a scene of brutality, but of transcendence through pain. The raven, a recurring archetype in Norse mythology, yanks the eyeball from the bloody socket, its string of flesh a tether between worlds. This act recalls Odin’s ancient tale—the god who gave up an eye at Mímir’s well in exchange for deeper knowledge. But here, the myth is reborn through raw human emotion. The god bleeds as a man bleeds.
The tree above becomes Yggdrasil, the World Tree, from which Odin once hanged himself in his quest for runic wisdom. The key hanging beside the raven hints at secret knowledge—gnosis—unlocked not through study, but through suffering. The eclipse or black sun in the sky casts an unnatural stillness, representing a moment outside time, when inner vision overcomes external sight.
In the background, the medieval village sleeps in indifference. Life goes on, unaware of the spiritual ordeal unfolding at its margins. This contrast deepens the artwork’s Memento Mori resonance: we are reminded not only of death, but of how often truth and transformation occur unnoticed.
